Land surface Interactions with the Atmosphere over the Iberian Semi-arid Environment

Working Groups

Objective: Three LIAISE Working Groups were established after the field campaign in November, 2021. The goal of these groups is to provide a forum for exchanges on research advances within LIAISE.

Working Group Description

WG 1 : Surface processes
Lead: Oscar Hartogensis, Co-chair: Mary-Rose Mangan

  1. Processes:
    • General: Water, energy and carbon balances and related processes in the interaction between the surface and the atmosphere (ET as key process that integrates all 3 balances). Latent/sensible heat fluxes links to the Boundary layer meteorology (WG2). Soil moisture is included in the coupling with WG3.
    • Scales: Heat, momentum, H2O and CO2 fluxes/exchanges and radiation composition (e.g SIF) from leaf to field to landscape scale
  2. Sites:
    • SEB data: 7 local sites, 9 stations
    • Lake Ivars (link with WG1, WG3)
  3. Methods:
    • Measurements and atmospheric and hydrological model applications
    • Leaf scale: Ecophysiology (H2O+CO2)
    • Field scale: EC, SEB (H2O+CO2+energy), towers, DTS, scintillometers, soil moister and heat, drones (SIF, Ts)
    • Landscape scale: Aircraft-based remote sensing data of (GLORI, HyPlant, SLAP, CzechGlobe) and satellite remote sensing products

WG 2: Meteorology
Lead: Daniel Martínez-Villagrasa, Belén Martí López

  1. Processes:
    • Vertical: ABL processes
    • Horizontal: Mesoscale circulations related to wet-dry, topography, sea breeze interaction
    • Fire, interactions with ABL (M. Castellnou)
  2. Sites:
    • In situ local scale: La Cendrosa, Els Plans, ABL soundings, UHF, UAV profiles (obs), Mollerussa UAVs
    • In situ over domain: Turbulence and state variables from the ATR42 (obs)
    • Combined: Lidar observations (LMD)
  3. Methods:
    • Observations
    • Mesoscale IOP Case studies
    • Mesoscale Model Intercomparison Project (M. A. Jiménez Cortés)
    • LES
    • Column modeling

WG 3: Regional hydrology
Lead: Martin Best, Jan Polcher, Co-chair: Julie Colligan

  1. Processes:
    • Irrigation & streamflow/discharge
    • Reservoirs (and their regulation)
    • Regional scale estimates of surface properties related to soil water
  2. Sites:
    • Ebro basin: linkages between reservoir storage, irrigation, river storage & routing/damns (canals?)
    • Boldu (soil moisture network, irrigation amounts known, satellite retrieved irrigation timing/amounts (IRRIGATION+)
  3. Methods:
    • Offline LSM and hydrological model basin scale simulations using Spanish SAFRAN forcing dataset for 2021 and longer term
